Short answer
To visit family, prepare proof of the relationship (birth or marriage certificate), a short host letter with their U.S. status, and your own funds and ties. The officer still decides on your intent to return.
Relationship proof
- Birth certificate for parents/children

- Translation if the original is not in English
Host status
A copy of the host’s green card, visa, or naturalization certificate with their letter helps, but you still need your own file.
Your own file
Funds, a job or school to return to, and a return plan matter more than the family proof. The visit purpose explains the trip; your ties decide the case.
